My 90 year old grandfather is my pen pal and I am in no way whatsoever ashamed of it. Writing to him has reminded me of the sour fact that the act of putting pen on paper is a dying communication tool that should really be dug up out of its half buried grave! I like to think of myself as slightly old fashioned - which in 2017 means taking longer to adapt to Instagram stories and reading paper books instead of a kindle on the train. But on top of that, I love to hand write a good old letter. That is, no texting or email (as she drafts this post on her iPhone's 'Notes'), but using the mysterious tool they call 'pen', once used proudly in grade 3 after accepting the duty that was your Penmanship Licence. Boy that was an exciting day in class. It's by far the classiest way to say something, especially "thank you". My mum drilled into me from a young age to handwrite 'thank you' letters to anyone who had given me a gift for my birthday. I always thought it a waste of time, especially since emails were the new & easiest form of communication, until one fine day I received one myself and thought, well hot diggity mum really knew what she was talking about (a common occurrence after leaving home). It's a special treat receiving a handwritten letter, much like a postcard (the most tourist-y thing I allow myself to attend to overseas). Monogrammed stationary packs sophisticate even the most childish handwriting and take the personalised trend to the nek level. Or, do as Miss Austen did and write about the social notions in your circle of acquaintances (AKA squad goss). Take a leather bound journal on your Euro trip and accumulate an extra 25 points of 'CULTURE' as you pass GO. Plus, you'll never forget the name of the, "French Harry Styles", you kissed in a Prague nightclub on your gap year (yes, really). If you're still not convinced and prefer to stick to communicating through invisible airwaves, just take a little squiz at your Insta stories... notice anything? Handwriting! I'm still waiting for Snapchat to update their hideous brushstroke to match the fluidity of Instagram's. Or, skip the initials and go straight to your own handwriting when personalising your phone case, à la The Daily Edited. Maybe once you've practiced a bit on your Instagram/Snapchat/shopping list, you can even send a letter to your grand-something. No doubt they'll appreciate it more than a generic Christmas card. written by Camilla
